Baisary is a white chalk canyon about eight hundred metres long, hidden among hills 290 kilometres from Aktau. Flint deposits stud its walls, and fossilised sea urchins turn up in the rock — a sea washed over this place millions of years ago.
Halfway along, the canyon splits in two: one branch leads deeper in, where the walls narrow and the forms grow stranger — thin ridges, "sails" and towers.
The scale is deceptive: from outside the canyon looks small, but inside the walls rise tens of metres. Come in the first half of the day, before the sun bleaches the rock and washes out the detail.
