Geology and history

Stone Bag is a piece of Caspian coast 80 kilometres from Aktau, where a sandy shore cuts into a rocky ridge. The limestone is eroded into basins and ledges, with shallow clear pools between them.

In calm weather the water is so clean that small fish are visible several metres down with the naked eye. The sunsets here are among the strongest on the coast: the sun drops straight into the sea and for a few minutes the rocks turn copper.

The spot works well for a night by the water: a fire on the rocks, the sea close by and the nearest village lights far behind you.
