Natural Wonders of Mangystau: Immersion in the Wild
The Valley of the Stone Balls → Kok-Kala → Samal Gorge and 15 more stops

Beket-Ata is an underground mosque in a chalk slope and the main pilgrimage site of Mangystau. A long stairway leads down the escarpment, and Ustyurt mouflons roam the hillsides.
Beket-Ata is an underground mosque carved into a chalk slope at the edge of the Ustyurt escarpment, 300 kilometres from Aktau. It is the region's main pilgrimage site, drawing people from across Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries.
A long stairway descends the cliff to the mosque; from the top a white valley opens up to the horizon. Inside are several chambers hewn from the rock, where visitors keep silence.
The surrounding slopes are protected: Ustyurt mouflons — wild sheep you rarely see this close — move freely here. The site is active, so dress modestly and photograph without flash and never towards those praying.
Honest numbers before you take the wheel. We are not selling an adventure — we are explaining what you would be dealing with.
Driving here yourself requires four-wheel drive and a water supply: there are no fuel stations or services on the route.
