Zhygylgan means "the fallen" in Kazakh: a vast piece of land once collapsed inward, leaving an amphitheatre of broken slabs. Fossil footprints of sabre-toothed cats and hipparions have been found on its stones.
Cape Zhygylgan is a giant collapse on the Caspian coast, 150 kilometres from Aktau. A section of land once fell inward, leaving an amphitheatre of shattered slabs, fissures and deformed rock — a landscape hard to read as natural at first glance.
It is a natural archive: traces of ancient wildlife survive in the stone. Fossil footprints of sabre-toothed cats and hipparions, ancestors of the modern horse, have been found here, showing that thousands of years ago the cape belonged to a large steppe ecosystem.
At the bottom of the collapse, among the boulders, lies the small lake of Kuzdakary, shaped remarkably like a heart. Few people reach it, and it has long been the unofficial symbol of the place.
