Kapamsay Canyon → The Shakpak-Ata mosque → Shakpak-Ata Sai and 5 more stops

Shakpak-Ata is an underground mosque cut into a chalk cliff. Inside are columns, a dome with a light opening, Arabic inscriptions and horse petroglyphs left on the walls by centuries of pilgrims.
Shakpak-Ata is one of the sacred places of Mangystau: a mosque carved entirely into a chalk cliff 110 kilometres from Aktau. From outside you see only a façade with a door; inside opens a hall with columns and a dome pierced at its apex by a light shaft.
The walls are written and cut over: Arabic inscriptions sit beside petroglyphs — horses, palms, symbols — traces of pilgrims from many centuries who came here to pray.
A necropolis with kulpytas gravestones surrounds the mosque, and the cliff itself is eroded into honeycomb. The site is still in use: visitors take off their shoes inside and keep quiet.
