Shopan-Ata
Shopan-Ata is an underground mosque and one of the oldest necropolises in Mangystau. Kulpytas gravestones, adobe walls and mausoleums spread over several hectares around it.
Geology and history
Shopan-Ata is an underground mosque 230 kilometres from Aktau and one of the oldest religious complexes on the peninsula. White gates mark the entrance, beyond which the path descends to chambers hewn from the rock.
A vast necropolis surrounds the mosque: carved kulpytas gravestones, adobe walls, domed mausoleums. The stone is soft, and ornaments and inscriptions hundreds of years old are still legible on many slabs.
The site is still in use: pilgrims come here, and an old tree stands by the mosque, approached in prayer by tradition. Visitors walk the paths and never step onto the graves.
